Miller’s Opening Night Hits the Classroom

One of the enduring joys of a parent, a grandparent or a teacher is the delight in seeing a smile appear on a child’s face. It makes you feel like the world is gonna be okay — that there’s still hope for a brighter tomorrow.

Take a look at this good lookin’ group of South Carolina first-graders who’ve just finished a classroom reading of “Miller’s Opening Night.” Under the good instruction of my friend Miss Blythe Reynolds, this handsome collection of children just heard the tale of the young mouse, Miller, and his family who live in an old, abandoned theater in Augusta, Georgia. These students heard of the encouragement of Miller’s father, Frank, and also of the resulting hope that Miller then possessed, knowing that one day he would become a star and bring that old theater back to life.

Miller at The Book Tavern

Downtown Augusta is where Miller’s story unfolds. And so it’s fitting that “Miller’s Opening Night” is now on the shelves at The Book Tavern, Augusta’s quaint downtown bookseller, located only two blocks from the historic Miller Theater. The Book Tavern faces Broad Street in Suite 101 of the White’s building, 926 Broad Street. The store specializes in both used and new books and has a weekly children’s story-time on Wednesdays at 10:30 AM. I know that Miller would enjoy having his story told so very near his home at the Miller Theater. We’ll keep you posted on a date for a downtown book signing and reading.

Square Books Junior — An All ‘Round Success

Miller’s trek across the three states, from Georgia to Alabama to Mississippi landed us in the bookshop, Square Books Junior, located in the historic square in Oxford Mississippi. This quaint store offers a delightful selection of books to pique a child’s imagination. We enjoyed meeting the folks of Square Books Junior and being a part of the activity there.

It’s not only the books that make the children want to come to Square Books, it’s the twice weekly story-time that the shop hosts for children of all ages. Wednesdays and Saturdays give children an opportunity to hear stories read by authors and other in-house storytellers. On the day I was there, story-time ended with a lively selection of songs sung by Jill Moore, the bookseller’s resident musician and story leader who also plays the leading role in maintaining the wonderful selection of books for children. We were happy that Square Books Junior chose Miller’s Opening Night to feature at this past week’s story-time.

Miller in Mississippi

Miller’s Opening Night is on the road next week.

Book signing at Square Books Jr. in Oxford, Mississippi.

Square Books Jr. is the offspring of its parent, Square Books — both are really cool bookshops, one obviously catering more to children. Both stores are located in Oxford’s downtown Square. If you’ve never been to Oxford, you should make the trip one day. It’s a lovely Southern town and home to University of Mississippi as well as the famed author William Faulkner.

I’m looking forward to gathering with the children next week and reading Miller’s Opening Night. If by chance you’re going to be nearly, stop by Wednesday, August 19th at 10AM during the shops popular “story-time” hour. I look forward to meeting a bunch of new friends and signing a few books. It’ll be my opportunity to talk about my hometown, Augusta, Georgia. Wish me luck.
